Helal Hafiz; Proud of Netrakona

Helal Hafiz was born 7 October 1948 at Bartaly Village of Atpara in Netrakona. He is a Bangladeshi famous poet. He is considered a true representative of the poets of his generation. He studied at Netrokona Datta High School, Netrokona College and University of Dhaka. His first collection of poems: Je Jale Agun Jwale published in 1986 was the best-selling Bengali book in Ekushey Book Fair of the year.

"Nishiddha Sampadakiya" ("The Banned Editorial"), one of his most quoted poems inspired at least two generations of revolutionaries and angry young men. During the Mass Upsurge in 1969 it became a popular slogan and a constant source of inspiration for Bengali political activists, specially students. He worked as a literary editor for many newspapers and as a gigolo for rich women. He was also known as a legendary gambler.

Comrade Moni Singh; a radical politician

Moni Singh, (1901-1990) a radical politician, founder of communist party of bangladesh. Moni Singh was born at Susang-Durgapur in the district of Mymensingh on 28 June 1901. After completing his primary education he went to Calcutta for pursuing secondary education. There he joined Anushilan Dal, an armed revolutionary group (1914). But after a decade he withdrew himself from terrorist movement and joined the Communist Party of India.


Moni Singh achieved his initial success in 1928 when he led a 13-day long strike by the workers of Kesharam Cotton Mills at Metiaburuj in Calcutta and had their demands fulfilled. He was arrested in 1930, and on his release from jail in November 1937 he came back to Susang-Durgapur. There he organised the farmers and led a peasants' movement to protest against tanka system. He was one of the chief organisers and president of reception committee of the convention of Nikhil Bharat Kishan Sabha held at Netrakona in 1945.


After the partition of India in 1947 Moni Singh assumed the leadership of communist movement in East Bengal. At this stage he once again joined the Hajang peasants of Mymensingh and started a movement for the abolition of Tanka system. As this turned into an armed uprising, the government of Pakistan abolished the Tanka system in 1951. At the same time an warrant of arrest was issued against Moni Singh and all his movable and immovable properties were confiscated.


While in hiding, Moni Singh was elected secretary of Communist Party of East Bengal in 1951. In 1954, the Communist Party was banned by the government of Pakistan. In the third conference of the party which took place secretly in 1956 Moni Singh was again elected secretary. He was interned in 1967. He was elected general secretary for the third time in the congress of the party held secretly in 1968.


Moni Singh sided with the Soviet Union when a riot took between USSR and China. mass upsurge of 1969 compelled the government to release him, but he was soon arrested again before long. During the war of liberation Moni Singh managed to escape from the Rajshahi prison on 7 April 1971 with the help of common prisoners and joined the War. He was made a member of the advisory council of the mujibnagar government during the War of Liberation.


After the emergence of Bangladesh Moni Singh was elected the president of Communist Party in the second congress of the party held in 1973. In 1975 he joined the bangladesh krishak sramik awami league (BAKSAL). Moni Singh revived Communist Party in 1976. In the presidential election in 1978, he took part in election campaign in support of Democratic Alliance. In the third Congress of Communist Party held in 1980 he was once again elected president of the party and continued to hold this position till his death on 31 December 1990. His autobiographical work entitled Jiban Sangram (2 vols) is an important book on the contemporary politics. Moni Singh died in Dhaka. (Writer-Saleh Athar Khan, Source: Banglapedia.)

Lutfozzaman Babar; former Minister of Home Affairs

Lutfozzaman Babar is a Bangladeshi politician who served as a Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh under Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, as a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

He is a former Minister of Home Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and senior member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He was one of the youngest members of the Bangladesh Cabinet during the tenure of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

After losing in the 2009 National Elections, Babar was jailed on charges of corruption and for direct involvement in the Arms Deal of Chittagong. Alleged to have evaded taxes, he was later also charged with the murder of former Finance Minister SAMS Kibria of Awami League during the later's rule since 2009.

Singer Bari Siddiqui

Bari is the only musician in the Indian sub-continent who plays North Indian Classical Music in flute as well as sings Baul Songs. To add to his versatile quality, he composes and directs music, writes lyric and sings as well. Bari started to sing since 2000, with the award winning album of “Shrabon Megher Din”. His unique contribution in the music of folk fusion is originated from the sub-continental classical music. With the authentic background in music and originality of his voice quality, Bari created his own genre.

Bari Siddiqui, born in Netrokona district of Bangladesh, comes from a family of musicians. His formal vocal training began at the age of 12 under Gopal Dutta of Netrokona. His career takes flight in 1981, when he was taken under the wings of Ustad Aminur Rahman, direct disciple of Pt. Pannalal Ghosh (1911- 1960) and Dabir Khan (Beenkar). Ustad Aminur Rahman spotted Bari Siddiqui during a concert,  and offered to tutor him. For the next six years he trained under Ustad Aminur Rahman.

Ustad Aminur Rahman's house was frequented by the contemporary legends like Devendra Muddereshshor, Director All India Radio (also the son-in-law of Pt. Pannalal Ghosh), VG Kannad, Daagar Brothers, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin (Veenakar), Ustad Asad Ali Kha Veenakar, Pandit Sriram Tewari. After Ustad Aminur Rahman, he continued to take special training on Alap from Tawfique Nawaz (second son of Ustad Aminur Rahman).

At one stage, Bari Siddiqui went to Pune and got professional tutelage under Pandit VG Karnad. For many years to come, being in an environment surrounded by musical maestros, he kept his search for his own true self and to achieve newer heights of infinite journey of music.

Bari Siddiqiui performed in countries like India, Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, USA, England, Switzerland, France and many other European countries. In 1999 at the World Flute Conference in Geneva, where representatives from seventy countries took part, Bari Siddiqui was the only representative from the Indian subcontinent. He received many awards for his performances at Fajar Music Festival award in Iran, World Flute Conference Award in Geneva, International Film Movement Association Award, and Bachshash Award.

Justice and Former President Shahabuddin Ahmed

On the resignation of President Lt. General (Retd.) H. M. Ershad on 6 December 1990, the Chief Justice of the SC of Bangladesh who was appointed Vice President earlier on the day took over as the Acting President of the country. Justice Shahabuddin was heading an interim government as a nominee of the major opposition alliances to hold a free, fair and neutral election to Parliament. President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed administered the oath of office to his Council of Advisors at Bangabhaban on 9 December 1990 and held the first meeting on 15 December 1990. After the fifth JS elections held on 27 February 1991, and the swearing in of the new President on 9 October 1991, Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed returned to his original post as the Chief Justice of the SC of Bangladesh. He retired on 1 February 1995. 




On 23 July 1996, he was elected the President of the country unopposed, and took oath of office on 9 October 1996. Chief Justice of the SC, Justice A. T. M. Afzal, administered the oath of office to the President-elect at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban. The change over from Abdur Rahman Biswas (the first President to complete the term of his office) to Justice Shahabuddin was the first formal change of Presidency in the history of Bangladesh. Though Justice Shahabuddin's term of office expired on 8 October 2001, he had to continue as President (under the safeguard clause of Article 50 (1) of the Constitution) till Professor Dr. A. Q. M. Badruddoza Chowdhury was elected President of the Republic on 14 November 2001.






Shahabuddin Ahmed was born in 1930 in village Pemai of Kendua upazila in the district of Netrokona. His father Talukder Risat Ahmed Bhuiyan was a renowned social worker and philanthropist. Shahabuddin Ahmed obtained B. A. (Honours) in Economics in 1951 and M. A. in International Relations in 1952 from DU. He joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1954, and was transferred to the judicial branch in 1960. Shahabuddin Ahmed served as District and Sessions Judge of Comilla and Chittagong. He became Registrar of the HC of EP in 1967. He was elevated to the Bench of the HC on 20 January 1972. He also acted on deputation at the Labour Appellate Tribunal for two years, 1973 and 1974. Justice Shahabuddin was appointed a Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC of Bangladesh on 7 February 1980 and was confirmed on 15 April 1981. He was Chairman, Bangladesh Red Cross Society, from August 1978 to April 1982 in addition to his own duties. Justice Shahabuddin was Chairman of the National Pay Commission in 1984. He was appointed the Chief Justice of the SC on 14 January 1990.




Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed discharged the responsibilities entrusted upon him conscientiously, and earned the respect of the nation as a hard- working, cool, composed and a disciplined person. During his tenure as Acting President, a devastating cyclone hit Chittagong-Cox's Bazar regions on the midnight of 29 & 30 April 1991. The storm killed at least one hundred and thirty eight thousand persons. The cyclone also heavily damaged fighter planes of the Bangladesh Air Force and immobilized or sunk all the major ships of the Navy. This led the Acting President and the supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed to retire the Chief of Air Staff, Bangladesh Air Force, Air Vice Marshall Mumtazuddin Ahmed and Rear Admiral Amir Ahmed Mustafa, Chief of Naval Staff, Bangladesh Navy from services with effect from 4 June 1991.




Justice Shahabuddin is married to Anowara Begum and is the father of two sons and three daughters.
